Over the course of twenty-four hours, a marriage gives its last shuddering breath in La Notte, featuring two of the screen’s most melancholic beauties, Jeanne Moreau and Marcello Mastroianni. Feted novelist Giovanni and his discontented wife, Lidia, visit a dying friend in the hospital, an event which severely rattles Lidia. The two spend the rest of their day in parallel worlds, Lidia engrossed in her own dark thoughts, and Giovanni single-mindedly pursuing extramarital romance. There is no hope for reconciliation even at dawn, on the green grass of a golf course, where the film leaves us after a wandering night of jazz club, dance party and mal de vivre…
