International humanitarian law:

Article 79 of the Additional Protocol to the 1949 Geneva Convention for the Protection of Civilian Persons in Military Conflict states that civilian journalists who perform their duties in areas of armed conflict must be respected and treated as civilians, and protected from all forms of deliberate attack, provided that they do not act contrary to their civilian status.

Study of the International Committee of the Red Cross on customary rules of international human law 2005:

Article 34 of Chapter Ten: “Civilian journalists working on professional assignments in areas of armed conflict must be respected and protected as long as they are not taking a direct part in hostilities.”

Resolution 1738 of the UN Security Council:
